According to incoming Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma, President-elect Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. wants to “recast” the budget for the education and health sectors.
“Mayroong isang mahalagang ibinilin si President-elect Bongbong Marcos,’yung reviewhin at saka i-recast ‘yung budgets ng various ministries, kung puwede mangyari na iukol ang available government resources doon po sa may kinalaman sa health… education,” he remarked.
“Kasi parang mayroong negative na lumalabas na marami raw hindi marunong sumulat, magbasa tsaka kaunting arithmetic,” he said.
The Philippines was placed worst in reading comprehension among 79 countries and economies in the 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment.
According to Laguesma, incoming government officials also highlighted the need to teach good manners.
Under the K to 12 curricula, GMRC was previously withdrawn as a regular subject and replaced with other courses such as Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao and Araling Panlipunan.
Senate Bill No. 1224, also known as the Comprehensive Values Education Act, aims to make values education, including GMRC, a core topic in K–12 schools.
Values education, including GMRC, will be taught to elementary and senior high school pupils for one hour each day under the proposal.
Marcos wants to have this highlighted in the teaching-learning process to mold the minds of the younger generation as to stewards of success and good citizens in the future.
He also said, “Dinagdagan pa ‘yan sa pulong na dapat mayroon ding good manners and right conduct para naman ma-develop din ‘yung ‘ika nga ay kahandaan at ‘yung pagiging moral fiber ng society natin ay tumatag.”
