The Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) has issued the proposed school calendar for the upcoming school year with little over two months left in School Year 2021–2022.

Education Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio provided an overview of the important dates the organization has scheduled for the school year 2022–2023 during a virtual press conference on April 19, 2022.

According to San Antonio, DepEd suggests beginning the school year 2022–2023 on August 22, 2022, and finishing it on July 7, 2023.

2-week Christmas Break

Beginning December 19, 2022, a two-week Christmas break is planned before courses resume on January 2, 2023. A mid-year break is also scheduled for February 6–10, 2023.

Each quarter will be divided into the following dates:

  • 1st Quarter: August 22, 2022 – November 4, 2022
  • 2nd Quarter: November 7, 2022 – February 3, 2023
  • 3rd Quarter: Feb. 13, 2023 – April 28, 2023
  • 4th Quarter: May 2, 2023 – July 7, 2023

End-of-year rites will start on July 10 and last through July 14, 2023. The start of the school year 2023–2024 is anticipated to be on August 28, 2023, if this proposed calendar is followed as intended.

San Antonio additionally declared that the upcoming academic year will feature “additional one week for remediation and intervention activities, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.”

Blended Learning Remains

For the past two years, the education sector has been introducing blended learning methods as a means of adjusting to the new normal—a transition brought on by the COVID-19.

With the start of the new school year, DepEd said it will continue to use a blended learning strategy where schools employ both conventional in-person learning and online courses. The agency is looking to hold additional in-person classes as a result of the loosening of COVID-19 restrictions and the expansion of immunization campaigns to include the younger population.

“Blended [learning] po tayo, mas marami na rin face-to-face [classes], pero hindi tayo papayag na [may] mga disruptions in classes in the form of activities during the 10 weeks that the quarter is on.” San Antonio said.

Although the DepEd does not mandate COVID-19 vaccination for in-person instruction, it strongly advises parents to have their children immunized for added safety.
