Proposed by Quezon City Rep. PM Vargas proposed doubling the salary of public school teachers.
In House Bill 4070, Vargas wants the salary of new teachers or Teacher 1 to be raised from P25,439 or Salary Grade 11 to P49,835 or SG 19.
The salary of teachers with higher positions will also be followed by the increase.
According to Vargas, “With the rising costs of living, many teachers still struggle with the financial limitations of their profession while maintaining the delivery of quality education to our students amid the pandemic.”
The congressman said that his proposal is based on the request of the teachers because they still received very little increase under the Salary Standardization Law of 2019 or Republic Act 11466.
Furthermore, the lawmaker said, “We must recognize the dedication and guarantee the retention of competent teachers by ensuring that the remuneration due to them is commensurate to their workload.”
In this 19th Congress, a total of 15 proposals have been filed calling for teachers’ salaries to be raised.
